I am traveling from Missouri to San Antonio in late September. I would like to stop and crappie fish a lake in central or East Texas, Southern Oklahoma, or Western Louisiana. I will only fish one to two days and will hire a guide. What is your suggestion of the best lake to catch good numbers of good size crappie at this time of year? Why?

The lake you are looking for is Toledo Bend. This lake is located in East Texas and Western Louisiana. It has the reputation of being the best crappie lake in the nation. In September the crappie will just be starting their fall feeding. For some reason crappie do not get really active in the hot summer months but things start to kick off in Sep. until the spring spawn in March. The cooler temperatures only serve to concentrate the crappie during the fall and winter. You may fill an ice chest in Toledo Bend without moving the boat an inch. The crappie will be big, healthy, and hungry that time of year. There will be guides available and plenty of places to stay. This lake has a nationwide reputation for it’s sheer numbers of bass and crappie. Enjoy yourself. Good luck!

You could also try Toledo Bends sister, Sam Raburn. It, like Toledo Bend is a crappie heaven. As a kid I can remember pulling 2lb crappie up and thinking that was normal. Lol, I caught a 14 incher here and my friend thought it was big! The great thing for Raburn is it has gotten better over the past few years. .
