What is Tucson, Arizona really like?

I’m considering moving to the Southeast Tucson area and i don’t want a travel guide description of the area. I’m going to be in college and i’m a relatively young female. I don’t mind the heat because i grew up in Houston. So, what’s it like there? Culturally? Demographically? All that jazz.

It’s definitely a college town, which seems a little weird, because it’s a pretty big city (the population of the metro area is over 1 million). A good percentage of Tucson’s population (well, Tucson’s population in central Tucson) goes to the U of A (or PCC) so there’s lots of young people, and it’s totally dead and empty in the summer when everyone goes home. There’s also a lot of old people (the snow birds) around in the winter. I really think Tucson’s population in the winter is about double what it is in the summer. So, it’s a very college oriented sort of city- lots of bars, clubs, restaurants, and very artsy and liberal. Everyone in Tucson also cares a bit too much about UA sports, football and basketball anyway (I’m not much for sports).
So, yeah, I like Tucson, I live here. I used to live in Phoenix, and I like Tucson better. It has more of a community feel than Phoenix does.

I would agree with a first answer you got. Just wanted to add that the southeast part of Tucson (actually all of the south Tucson) is not the best place to live. Not safe. Best neighborhoods are North of Speedway. Catalina Foothills is the best.
