Is there whitewater rafting close to Atlanta? (Looking for recommendation – not just a Google search.)?

We will be visiting Atlanta (traveling from the south,) and would like to take a whitewater rafting trip – a guided trip, just a couple of hours. We’re tourists – not Bear Grylls! Anyway – can someone recommend something close to Atlanta?

yes! I went whitewater rafting on the Chattooga on a recent trip to Atlanta with my aunt and uncle. I believe the rapids were classes 2 and 3, but they had some 4s (I was with my young cousin). I had a lot of fun. I believe the rafting headquarters, which is actually in Tennessee, is about a half and hour to an hour away from the actual city of Atlanta. I’ll have to call my aunt and uncle for details, but if you want you can email me at weaver.charlotte930 [at] gmail.com and I can email you all the information.

Yes, there is the Chattahoochee that runs from the top of GA and heads downward to the West. I forget what exit it is, but it is not far. You park your car at one exit, and then a bus will take you up like 3 or 4 exits, you get in a raft and come back down. I’m not sure exactly how long it takes, but people do it all the time. Or you can do it personally. However I’m not sure how ‘choppy’ or ‘fast’ the water is in all places. The area I’m familiar with is pretty shallow, but has a VERY strong current. It is low, so many people just go there to ‘play’ in the water, but it is strong enough to carry you away and bump you up against some nice rocks. So I imagine ‘up river’ where the rafters go would logically be ‘stronger’ and more inclined to ‘white water’ type rafting. I forget exactly what exit but it North Atlanta, but not too far up. I live in South West Atlanta and it takes us about 25 minutes to get there with traffic and all. Check it out.

Yea, but what i went to was canoeing and Tubing down the Chattahoochee River in Cumming’s
Its like 20 min from atlanta and its exit 13
Its ALOT of fun, but everytime i went i had to fall out of the tube/canoe lol
Its cool if u have family or friends, last time i went was last year and the water was cool
It last arounf 2-3 hours depending on how fast you go, and the rapids are nice at the end
and the business is called Tailwater Tubing
After that, you could go to the lake and relax, rent a jet ski or just go to a nice quiet spot and bbq, we did that sunday

You have to drive north a couple of hours but you can whitewater raft on the Nantahala River. The Nantahala Outdoor Center will arrange everything. The trips are guided and timed with the release of water from one of the dams (Lake Fontana I think). You can also raft the Tuckaseegee which is also a couple of hours north of Atlanta. Tallulah Gorge is just north of Atlanta but even though it is the deepest gorge and has beautiful falls it is not a place for whitewater rafting. I am going to give you a link to the NOC website and in case you decide to make it an overnight trip, I will give you a link to the place I stayed before. Have fun!
